How Do African Businesses Get Start Up Capital?

Hi again, sorry again for the long pause. It seems to be occurring more than what I would like, but things have been moving at whirlwind pace recently.

Anyway, this is a question for all of you entrepreneurs, business students, professors, and others in the know on the inner workings of start ups in Africa. How did you or someone that you know get start up funds?

Trade Versus Aid in Africa, Who Wins?

It seemed like the time was right for me to pen this post about trade -vs- aid. This is a discussion that has a tremendous amount of relevance in Sub Saharan Africa. But it is also relevant in other parts of the world where developing economies are predominate.

What if They Don’t Buy?

This post I am writing in response to the story about the UK Soil Association’s decision to increase barriers to airfreight produce imports from other countries. When I read this story my heart became heavy for the Kenyan and Ghanaian farmers who will likely lose income and might ultimately be forced to sell or reorganize their farms; as a result of the harsh new standards imposed upon agricultural products flown into the UK from abroad.

Inspiration

During my time away from blogging about entrepreneurship in Africa, I have been inspired by the works of my neighbors ( in the Africa blogosphere). So I wanted to highlight a few of the posts that have left me in adoration.

Outsourcing Business Processes to Africa

For those of you who have not known me long, you may not have known me long-but you do know that I am crazy about letting others know why they should be doing business in Africa. But people are imperfect, as I wholeheartedly admit that I am an example of human imperfection. It has occurred to me that sometimes in my zest for talking about Africa’s business environments, I may tend to speak in a very general sense. But maybe if you have been on the receiving end of such a conversation, and you have said to yourself-”what type of business in Africa?” or “Africa, I thought that people only go there to help the needy”.

Council on Foreign Relations Tracks 2008 Candidates on Africa Policy

One of my all time favorite publications, dealing with economics and international affairs, is the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) . I have been reading this journal for almost a decade and view it almost in the way that I’d view an encyclopedia. So you can imagine my enthusiasm for them drawing attention towards U.S. Policy Toward Africa. In this instance what they have done is created a tool that can be used to summarize the views and records of each presidential candidate for the 2008 US elections. CFR has named this tool the Issue Tracker -The Candidates on U.S. Policy toward Africa.
