If and when the ‘iPad’ arrives, it won’t be a stopgap solution

Whether the rumored "iPad" comes out this year or next, Apple will almost certainly position the device (assuming it even exists; the company has made no official statement about it) as a mobile computing device, NOT as a laptop.

Are Macs and Wal-Marts a good match?

Apparently, there are plans afoot for Wal-Mart to sell Macs, as well as iPhones and iPods, in at least some of their stores. I'm not sure that's a good idea, but it's worth pursuing, at least on a trial basis.

Apple should NOT cut Mac prices

There’s a constant cry from some quarters for Apple to slice prices on the Macs to: a) compete with the bargain bin PeeCees, b) accommodate consumers in these tough economic times, and/or c) prove those Microsoft ads wrong. To which I say: don’t do it

You’ve been watching TV on your Mac—I know you have

Recent stats from Nielsen Online, a division of The Nielsen Company, show that (no surprise) YouTube continued to rank as the No. 1 video web brand with 5.5 billion total streams in April.

Apple won't: a) buy EA, b) buy Twitter, c) launch its own game console

Tough economic times or not, Apple is rolling in dough. It has an US$29 billion cash balance, so this has led to some crazy speculation on what Apple will do with the moolah. There's been talk -- crazy talk in my opinion -- that Apple will buy Twitter and/or Electronic Arts.

My take on the ‘iPhone lite, ‘Apple Pad’

Sometimes the rumors get it right, sometimes not. But I think they’re at least half off on the reports of Verizon and Apple working together on an “iPhone lite” and/or an “Apple pad.” My take: the former isn’t coming, the latter is. Though not necessarily with Verizon.

DVDs, Blu-ray discs may be around longer than most pundits think

Whether or not Blu-ray ever succeeds in replacing DVDs, I do wish that Apple would offer the necessary support in Mac OS X (Snow Leopard, perhaps) so that third parties could make Blu-ray players (as well as recorders, which are already offered) for the Mac. I know that Apple wants to convince us that renting and buying movies online are the future (which is why we may never see Blu-ray player/recorders built into a Mac), but hat future is a ways off yet.

By my new way of calculating it, Apple is the number one computer vendor in the US

Maybe it would be cheating but what if iPhones and iPod touches were tallied into the total for Macs sold during a quarter? Imagine what that would do for the Mac’s market share.

Apple announces its latest financial results today at 2 pm (Pacific). Naturally, we’ll be covering the announcements in-depth. But first I wanted to give you the predictions of what Apple will announce, as determined by the Sellers Research Group.

iMac to be retired this year? I don’t think so

Ian Lamont, writing for The Industry Standard says he thinks that Apple will announce no later than Sept. 30, 2009, that the iMac is being discontinued. I think he’s waaay off base, but you have to admire his penchant for details.
