Sustainable Business Development - Benefiting your Community

Sustainable Business Development was popularized just over 22 years ago by a report put out by the Brundtland Commission. The world economy was growing and throughout the late 60’s and into the 80’s world development advanced rapidly with little regard to the environment and the Brundtland Commission, which came out of the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development, characterized ‘sustainable development’ as: “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

As a business leader and entrepreneur, we can benefit from the agenda established as a result of these United Nation Conferences in order to combat Poverty, Change Unsustainable Patterns of Consumption and Protect Bio-Diversity and Natural Resources.

Adding up Points for LEED - a numbers game for SIPs

Structural Insulated Panels, or SIPs, is a product that is becoming more popular with it's high energy saving potential and value in construction material and labor costs. A common marketing trend is to promote the many points that are achievable by using said product, and the common adage Caveat Emptor still applies.

When rating a particular product that will be implemented into a building application being constructed for LEED credits, we have to consider two points of view that I refer to as Direct Application, or Indirect Application.

Are Carbon Emissions Like Cholesterol?

BACKGROUND
In seminars around the world, I have talked about how carbon emissions are analogous to “fat” in a diet… It is something we don’t want, but is often an unavoidable part of our daily lives. We can accumulate fat on our bodies in many ways, but mostly through “bad” habits. Although challenging, we can change our habits and slowly get rid of the fat. The same is true with carbon emissions… fossil fuels have been our “bad” habit. We can consciously wean ourselves off in a planned manner, or we may have to hastily quit due to supply shortages, energy and/or carbon price spikes, climate impacts, wars or any number of other reasons which we cannot yet see... But Carbon is really more like Cholesterol...

The Electric Car

Quite rare and somewhat quirky in appearance, the electric car will take on a much more visible role on North American streets and roads in the next few years. Beginning in 2010, electric cars will capture a continuously increasing share of the motor vehicle market. How did we get here and what should we expect?

Enough Is Enough Strategies for Change

Obama scolds Wall Street last week for giving themselves $18.4 billion in bonuses, the same amount they gave themselves in 2004 when the economy was quite strong. Many of these bonus-hungry firms are the same ones that have recently been in front of Congress with their hats in their hands looking for bailout funds.

How do you know when it is time to change strategies, end the run. With recent spot light on Wall Street Greed, shines the light on a basic human characteristic[Money and Power], and can wreak havoc on our lives as well as others when left unchecked.

Here are the basic five components to knowing if you’ve had enough:
